Veteran Iraqi journalist Haitham El Zobaidi, Editor-In-Chief of Al Arab daily, Passes Away in London

Veteran Iraqi journalist Dr Haitham El Zobaidi, Board Chairman of the UK-based Al Arab Publishing House, passed away on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at a hospital in London, following a prolonged illness. He was 61 years old.

Dr El Zobaidi served as editor of several publications and news platforms issued by Al Arab Publishing House, including the prominent Arabic-language daily Al Arab, the English-language online outlet The Arab Weekly, and Middle East Online, published in both Arabic and English.

El Zobaidi held a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of Baghdad, along with master’s and doctoral degrees from Imperial College, University of London. He was renowned for his deep interest in cultural and political affairs, and for his insightful writings on the impact of technological advancements on public life, politics, and the media. 

Until his final days, the late journalist continued to contribute his weekly column to Al Arab newspaper. His last article, titled “Water Sovereignty: How King Mohammed VI’s Vision Has Made Morocco a Bulwark Against Drought”, was published on May 7.

After Dr. El Zobaidi took the helm, Al Arab quickly transformed into a key source of Arab news for foreign media outlets seeking Arab journalism that not only offers informed analysis but also understands how to engage, address and persuade the Western reader.
