Amid a vibrant cultural presence, the Sultan Bin Ali Al Owais Cultural Foundation hosted a grand event on Tuesday, May 27, to mark Emirati Writers ‘Day with a book signing for recently published Emirati works (2024 and 2025).
More than 100 titles were distributed free of charge on this exceptional occasion in the nation’s cultural calendar. The foundation’s main exhibition hall was filled with Emirati writers, authors, and intellectuals, who gathered in a joyful and spirited atmosphere that blended cultural pride with social engagement.
The signing ceremony was attended by H.E. Abdul Hamid Ahmed, Secretary-General of the Sultan Bin Ali Al Owais Cultural Foundation, along with Dr. Fatima Al Sayegh, Nasser Al Dhaheri, and Abdullah Al Owais, members of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees. A large gathering of writers, public figures, Arab authors, journalists, also took part in the event, expressing their delight at this unique cultural occasion, which brought together an impressive number of Emirati literary figures.
A significant number of veteran Emirati writers launched their latest books at the event, including Mohammed Saeed Al Dhanhani, Zain Shahin, Ali Obaid Al Hameli, Mohammed Al Joker, Karim Matouk, Aisha Sultan, Ali Al Abdan, Nasser Al Dhaheri, Sheikha Al Jabri, Khalid Al Budoor, Najoom Al Ghanem, Basma Younis, Asma Al Zarouni, Mohammed Al Habsi, Iman Youssef, Salha Obaid, Suad Rashid Al Marzouqi, Fahad Al Mamari, Obaid Bu Melha, and Suad Zayed Al Marzouqi, among others. The gathering reflected the rich intellectual diversity of the UAE’s literary scene and showcased the contributions of some of its most prominent cultural voices.
The Al Owais Foundation chose to hold this celebration in conjunction with the centenary of the birth of poet Sultan Al Owais. As part of the occasion, the Foundation invited 100 Emirati writers from across generations to sign their publications, creating a unique opportunity for seasoned authors to meet emerging voices in an atmosphere of cultural exchange and dialogue.
The gathering fostered a familial spirit that embodied a vibrant cultural and social dynamic among the nation’s literary figures. The initiative also reflects the Foundation’s commitment to supporting serious writers who contribute to raising public awareness and promoting cultural values—an expression of appreciation for every wordsmith who harnesses the soft power of literature to shape hearts and minds.
H.E. Abdul Hamid Ahmed, Secretary-General of the Sultan Bin Ali Al Owais Cultural Foundation, said: “The Foundation’s initiative to invite Emirati writers to this event is a gesture of recognition and appreciation for every creative individual who has enriched our cultural library and reinforced the presence of Emirati identity in cultural forums both at home and abroad. This celebration is being held for the second consecutive year, following a similar event last year that was well received by the UAE’s intellectual community. It provided an opportunity for writers to connect, exchange their publications, engage in meaningful cultural dialogue, and share perspectives directly with one another.”
The Secretary-General added that inviting 100 writers from various generations to mark the centenary of Sultan Al Owais’s birth aligns with the Foundation’s broader celebrations of this significant occasion. Sultan Al Owais remains one of the most prominent cultural, economic, and social figures both in the UAE and across the Arab world. The award that bears his name is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious Arab cultural honours.
On their parts, the participating writers and authors expressed their deep appreciation to the Al Owais Cultural Foundation for this landmark initiative, praising its role in elevating the presence of local authors through a major event hosted by such a highly respected cultural institution. They especially valued the Foundation’s thoughtful gesture in supporting young writers—providing them with a platform to share their work and ideas alongside established and veteran authors. This inclusive approach not only encouraged emerging talents but also inspired them to pursue their literary and creative aspirations, drawing motivation from distinguished figures and striving to contribute further to the cultural landscape.
The recognition of Emirati writers stems from an initiative by His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, who also serves as the Honorary President of the Emirates Writers Union. The initiative coincides with the founding day of the Emirates Writers Union on May 26, 1984. The occasion serves as a tribute to the writer’s intellectual and humanitarian contributions, his pioneering role in literature and community development, and his efforts to instil a love for culture in future generations. It is a day cherished by every Emirati writer—one that honours the written word and those who uphold its value.
