Egyptian Singer Hany Shaker, ‘Prince of Arab Singing’, Dies After Long Illness

Veteran Egyptian singer Hany Shaker died on Sunday afternoon after a long battle with illness, following a deterioration in his health in recent weeks, sources close to him told Egyptian media.

Shaker had earlier been transferred to a hospital in Paris to continue treatment after suffering a complex health crisis that required admission to intensive care.

In recent days, the late artist experienced serious complications related to the colon, leading to a full surgical removal, followed by further health complications that significantly affected his condition, despite a slight improvement after the operation.

In a related development, singer Nadia Mostafa, spokesperson for Egypt’s Musicians’ Syndicate, had earlier said Shaker’s condition was under close medical supervision, warning against the spread of inaccurate information about his health.

The health crisis began with severe bleeding caused by a chronic colon condition, which led to his hospitalisation in Egypt, where he received multiple blood transfusions before the bleeding was controlled through interventional radiology.

His condition later worsened suddenly, including a brief cardiac arrest that required urgent resuscitation. He subsequently underwent delicate surgery and remained in intensive care for around 20 days, suffering from general weakness, prompting his family to transfer him abroad for further treatment.

Hany Shaker, widely known as the “Prince of Arab Singing”, was one of the most prominent figures in Arabic music and left a lasting mark through a career spanning decades.
