Renowned Syrian poet Hassan Ezzat passed away in Abu Dhabi on the morning of Tuesday, 22 July 2025, at the age of 75, following a long and difficult battle with cancer. He spent his final years enduring the pain of illness.
Born in Damascus in 1949, Ezzat pursued his higher education in the Syrian capital and went on to make a name for himself in literary journalism, both at home and abroad. He played a key role in establishing several cultural and literary magazines, serving as managing editor for publications such as Al Manara, Infinity, and Al Mutahar.
Ezzat was deeply committed to the integration of poetry with the performing arts, adapting his poetic works for the stage. His pieces were performed in theatres across Damascus, Aleppo, Cairo, Sharjah, Dubai, Valencia, and other cities. Among his celebrated productions was “Celebration for the Sun”, which blended poetry with music and singing.
Throughout his career, Ezzat served on numerous juries for Arab and international poetry and theatre awards. He was a member of the judging panel for the Mohammed Bin Rashid Global Award for World Peace and participated in the Spanish Cultural Forum for Mediterranean Peoples in Valencia. His poetry has been translated into several languages, broadening his reach and influence far beyond the Arab world.
