Yumna Al Eid named SIBF 2019 “Cultural Personality of the Year”

The Sharjah Book Authority has named Lebanese author and critic Dr. Yumna Al Eid (also known as Hikmat Sabbagh) as Cultural Personality of the Year for the 38th edition of the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF). This year’s edition of SIBF will be held under the theme of “Open Books, Open Minds” to celebrate Sharjah being named World Book Capital 2019. SIBF will host two thousand publishing houses from 81 countries.

Al Eid, author of “Al Nas Al Maftouh” (The Open Text) has been selected  in recognition of her efforts and work throughout more than four decades in the Arab literary field. Throughout her career, she has authored numerous studies and specialized researches in the fields of literary criticism, comparative criticism, literary documentation and historical approaches, among other subjects.

Her body of work has won many Arab and international awards and honors. She received the Al Owais Cultural Foundation Award for 1992-1993 in the Literary Studies and Criticism category.

She has enriched the Arab library with tens of publications including: “Mumarasat fil Naqd Al Adabi” (Practices of Literary Criticism, 1973); “Al Dalala Al Ijtima’iya lil Adab Al Romantiqi” (Social Connotations of Romanticism, 1979); “Qadaya fil Thaqafa wal Deemuqratiya” (Issues in Culture and Democracy,1980); “Fee Ma’rifat Al Nas” (Knowledge of the Text,1983); “Al Rawi: Al Mawqe’ wal Shakl” (The Narrator: Standpoint and Form, 1986); “Fil Qawl Al Shi’ri” (On Poetic Discourse, 1987); “Al Marxiya wa falsafat Al Lugha li Mikhail Bakhtin” (Marxism and the Philosophy of Language by Mikhail Bakhtin; “Asaleeb Al Sard” (Narrative Techniques, 1990); “Al Kitaba Tahawwul Fil Tahawwul: Muqaraba lil Kitaba Al Adabiyya fee Zaman Al Harb Allubnaniyya” (Writing, Transformation of the Transformation: an Approach to Literary Writing During the Lebanese war 1993); “Fan Al Riwaya Al Arabiyya Bayn Khusoosiyyat Al Hikaya wa Tamayyuz Al Khitab” (The Art of the Arabic Novel between the Specifics of the Story and Unique Discourse) and many others.

Commenting on the news, Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, Chairman of the Sharjah Book Authority, said, “Celebrating accomplished Arab intellectuals is an integral and focal pillar of SIBF. The book fair is not only an exhibition for new Arab and international titles, but also a cultural project founded on the vision of His Highness Shaikh Dr. Sultan Bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, focused on advancing Arabic culture, building bridges between civilizations and providing a platform for the young generations to continue on the path of renowned Arab intellectuals, authors, poets, and scientists.
