We\u00a0speak to the Emirati director about her debut feature film \u2013 and the respected Hollywood actor who could star<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Emirati director Nayla Al Khaja has finished shooting what she\u2019s intriguingly referring to as a \u201cteaser\u201d for her highly anticipated feature debut,\u00a0The Shadow<\/em>, a horror based on events the director herself witnessed.<\/span><\/p>\n

During the three-day shoot, Al Khaja and a cast and crew of more than 50 people\u00a0filmed in\u00a0several locations,\u00a0with the most memorable being a mansion in Jumeirah, Dubai, which Al Khaja describes as \u201cthe creepiest place you can imagine\u201d.\u00a0The result\u00a0was three complete scenes from the final film,\u00a0which Al Khaja says\u00a0could\u00a0stand alone as a short film.\u00a0The scenes are now in post-production and will be screened at a launch event in association with Vox Cinemas in September.<\/span><\/p>\n

The teaser will be shown to an invited audience of media and, crucially, potential investors, who Al Khaja says she hopes will be tempted to provide the funding necessary for her to complete her movie.<\/span><\/p>\n

Focusing on girl power<\/span><\/h2>\n

The director is understandably pleased to\u00a0have her first feature under way. She has dedicated a lot of time to moving on to a long-form film after making a series of well-received shorts, which date back to 1996\u2019s\u00a0Sweet 16<\/em>. But she isn\u2019t\u00a0only\u00a0excited about the movie itself.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHere, 12 women unite [on the cast and crew] to create something so vivid, it\u2019s amazing,\u201d she says. \u201cWorldwide, only five per cent of women directors specialise in this genre.\u201d Al Khaja says she hopes\u00a0to inspire more women in the region to follow\u00a0her lead and venture into filming difficult topics.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe UAE lacks female feature film directors of a certain calibre, and it\u2019s about time we see a change in this category,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n

Al Khaja\u00a0says her latest film\u00a0features\u00a0three\u00a0women delivering impressive performances in leading roles,\u00a0while there are also many women among the crew.\u00a0But one woman\u00a0stands out in Al Khaja\u2019s mind, executive producer Rita Dagher, who is the former head of acquisitions at international indie production and distribution\u00a0company Wild Bunch.\u00a0Her previous production credits include global hits\u00a0such asFahrenheit 9\/11, Four Lions<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>and A\u00a0Prayer Before Dawn<\/em>, and Al Khaja clearly has high hopes for\u00a0their partnership.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/em>Rita coming on board is a huge deal for me, because she\u2019ll be spearheading the feature and its distribution, and we already have a really cool strategy working ahead,\u201d she explains. \u201cI\u2019m over the moon about my first feature, but I\u2019m even more excited it\u2019s in the right hands. I didn\u2019t want to make a\u00a0local film that\u00a0simply screens locally and has a\u00a0short lifespan. So it\u2019s great to have someone on board that already has vast experience of distributing films outside the region that could help make something that could travel, someone that could already have pre-emptive negotiations for distribution under way before the film is even made.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Working with the local industry<\/span><\/h2>\n

Al Khaja\u00a0benefited from\u00a0fortuitous timing when it came to getting French producer Dagher on board, because she has recently arrived in the region to take up the role of creative producer at the newly\u00a0formed Arabic production house Yalla Yalla. The company was created by a partnership between Dubai-based indie distributor Front Row Filmed Entertainment and UK production house Rocket Science.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Shadow\u00a0<\/em>is unrelated to that\u00a0project, but Dagher has clearly jumped at the chance to get her teeth into the local industry. Al Khaja admits she was a little tense around the big hitter at first. \u201cI was really nervous having her on set because she\u2019s made over 22 features,\u201d\u00a0Al Khaja says.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s a heavyweight, so I was a bit on edge thinking she\u2019d be judging me, but after three days on set she said she was\u00a0really pleased with the way everything had been handled, so that gave me a nice boost\u00a0in confidence.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cRita doesn\u2019t mess around, so for her to like my work and trust me\u00a0\u2013 it\u2019s a big deal for me. It\u2019s like a stamp of approval from someone who really knows their craft.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Who she’d like to see star in the film<\/span><\/h2>\n

The addition of Dagher to the project also means that some big names are in the frame for the film\u2019s English-\u00adspeaking lead, too. The dialogue will be\u00a0about 60 per cent in the Khaleeji dialect with local actors taking on the role,\u00a0while\u00a0the rest of\u00a0the script is\u00a0in English thanks to\u00a0a British therapist being among the key characters.<\/span><\/p>\n

No firm decisions have been made about casting\u00a0yet, but Al Khaja\u00a0says high-calibre\u00a0actors such as Jeremy Irons have been\u00a0mentioned in hushed tones during production meetings. There\u2019s a further dash of Hollywood stardust behind the camera too, with\u00a0The Shadow\u00a0<\/em>cinematographer Mik Allen\u00a0able to list films such as\u00a0Love, Actually\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0The Mummy\u00a0<\/em>among his many credits.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Shadow\u00a0<\/em>certainly sounds an intriguing project, but there\u2019s one\u00a0thing\u00a0the director is keeping her lips sealed about: that mysterious real-life plot line.<\/span><\/p>\n

Understandably, Al Khaja doesn\u2019t want to ruin the surprise, although she\u2019s at pains to point out that she\u2019s \u201cthankful for all the support we have received from those who participated in the real events.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Beyond that, it looks like we\u2019ll have to wait until teasers are screened, funds are raised and A-list thespians are cast until we can find out more about this real-life piece of UAE horror folklore.<\/span><\/p>\n
