Age, a doctor’s advice or the demands of work may leave us little choice. It might be giving up smoking, or something seemingly less dramatic, like giving up coffee. We are all in love with it, perhaps without quite realising how deeply. Poets and writers may have understood this affection better than the rest of us. They have celebrated coffee, written about it and made it a companion to their solitude, their long nights and their thoughts.

The French novelist Honoré de Balzac was not merely fond of coffee. He was devoted to it, relying on it to sustain the long hours he spent writing his novels. He even wrote an essay about the pleasures and pains of coffee, describing its effects on the mind and body. Legend has it that he drank as many as fifty cups a day, although the figure is probably more literary myth than established fact. What is certain is that coffee was part of his writing ritual, and perhaps part of his suffering as well.

The Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish gave coffee a different place in his world. In his book Memory for Forgetfulness, he wrote that coffee should never be drunk in a hurry, describing it as the sister of time. For Darwish, coffee was not simply a means of waking up. It was a ritual that demanded patience and solitude, a moment in which a person could listen to himself. Perhaps that helps explain our attachment to coffee. We are not always searching for its taste, but for the time it gives us, or the time we imagine it gives us.

In his famous poem Breakfast, the French poet Jacques Prévert turned a cup of coffee into the centre of a quietly heartbreaking scene. A man pours coffee into a cup, adds milk and sugar, stirs it with a small spoon, drinks it and puts the cup down without speaking to the woman sitting opposite him. He then lights a cigarette, puts on his coat and leaves in the rain, without a word or a glance. The woman is left alone, crying.

It is a simple poem, requiring no grand language to convey the coldness that has settled between two people. The cup of coffee remains at the heart of the scene, a silent witness to the end of a love affair.

Writers did not confine their coffee drinking to their homes. Many turned cafés into offices, meeting places and second homes. Perhaps this was one of coffee’s greatest contributions to cultural life: it drew writers out of their solitude and gave them a small table where they could write while watching the world go by.

In Paris, for example, the history of certain cafés is inseparable from the history of French literature and philosophy. At Café de Flore in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir regularly gathered to write, work and meet friends. The café was far more than a place to drink coffee. Sartre recalled how they would work there from morning until noon, return after lunch and spend the rest of the day talking with friends. They felt entirely at home.

Also in Paris stands Le Procope, a café whose history dates back to the seventeenth century and whose tables were associated with figures such as Voltaire, Rousseau and Diderot. Imagine sitting at a table in a café where these philosophers once debated the ideas of the Enlightenment. The coffee you drink today may taste much like coffee served elsewhere, but the place itself carries memories that give the cup a flavour no coffee bean can provide.

Near the Paris Opera stands Café de la Paix, opened in 1862, another witness to the city’s rich literary past. Oscar Wilde was among its famous visitors, along with Marcel Proust, Émile Zola, Guy de Maupassant and Victor Hugo. Ernest Hemingway also immortalised the café in his novel The Sun Also Rises.

I had the pleasure of sitting in this café in September 2025 with the Emirati writer Nasser Al Dhaheri and other friends, surrounded by walls that still seemed to hold something of the memory of the writers who had passed through. One of the loveliest things about these historic cafés is that they have retained their names and locations long after the people who gave their tables such distinction have departed. It is almost as though coffee outlives those who drink it.

In Vienna, cafés acquired such a special place in the city’s life that its coffeehouse culture became part of Austria’s recognised cultural heritage. Café Central was frequented by writers and intellectuals, including Peter Altenberg and Stefan Zweig. One of the most charming traditions of Vienna’s cafés is that a customer can sit for hours over a single cup, reading newspapers, writing or talking, without feeling pressured to leave. It is as if the café is selling not so much coffee as time, allowing its visitors to spend it at their own pace.

Cross the Atlantic to Buenos Aires, and coffee has an equally rich literary history. At Café Tortoni, one of the Argentine capital’s oldest cafés, Jorge Luis Borges would drink coffee and meet friends. The café also welcomed writers and artists such as Federico García Lorca, Luigi Pirandello and Julio Cortázar. Much of its old character remains, from its marble-topped tables to the photographs that tell something of the city’s cultural history.

Then there is La Biela, in the Recoleta neighbourhood, a café associated with Borges and his close friend, the novelist Adolfo Bioy Casares. Statues of the two writers sit at one of its tables, as though the friends had never quite left. I sat between those two silent companions in June 2025, enjoying a small encounter with the memory of Argentine literature, even if my distinguished company happened to be made of bronze.

Arab cities, too, have their own rich history of coffee and literary life. In Cairo, Café Riche witnessed an important chapter in Egypt’s intellectual and cultural history. It was associated with writers such as Taha Hussein, Abbas Mahmoud Al Aqqad and Naguib Mahfouz. Another celebrated café, El Fishawy in Khan el-Khalili, became part of Cairo’s literary memory and one of the places Mahfouz enjoyed visiting.

Damascus holds a more personal place in my own memories of literary cafés. During the 1980s, I regularly visited Al Laterna, or Al Qandil in Arabic, meaning The Lantern. There, I would see and meet writers, poets and playwrights such as Mamdouh Adwan, Shawqi Baghdadi, Farhan Bulbul and Saadallah Wannous, among others.

These were not merely names printed on book covers or in newspapers and literary magazines. They were people sitting nearby, talking, arguing, exchanging news and discussing ideas. The pleasure of being in that café was no less than the pleasure of reading their work. Indeed, those encounters offered something that books alone could not: a glimpse of the human being behind the written word.

What all these cafés shared, despite their different cities, languages and visitors, was that they were never simply places selling a hot drink. They were meeting points between literature and everyday life, where conversations among writers mingled with the news of ordinary people, friendships and rivalries developed, ideas were born and perhaps books were imagined that were never written.

Today, cafés continue to multiply in cities around the world, each with its own name, design and varieties of coffee. Yet whenever I enter a modern café, I sometimes wonder whether these places have retained anything of the spirit of their predecessors.

People still gather around tables, but many are absorbed in their phones and laptops. Perhaps conversation has not disappeared. Perhaps it has merely changed form, moving from the table to the screen. Even so, I cannot imagine anything quite replacing the pleasure of sitting with a friend, following a conversation without knowing where it might lead, while the coffee grows cold before us unnoticed.

As for me, my doctor’s advice has made me think again about my relationship with this drink that has accompanied me for so many years: through mornings, books, writing, travel and meetings with friends.

Perhaps I can replace regular coffee with decaf and still preserve something of its rituals, its aroma and its taste.
