The Emirates Writers Union organi<\/span>s<\/span>ed a special celebration of Emirati Writer’s Day at its headquarters in Al Qasba, Sharjah, on Sunday, May 26, 2024.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

During the event, the Union announced the winners of the 15th edition of the Ghanem <\/span>Ghobash<\/span> Short Story Award<\/span> in the presence of <\/span>Dr.<\/span> Sultan Al <\/span>Amimi<\/span>, Chairman of the Union, Aisha Sultan, Secretary General of the Award, and the members of the jury.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This year, the Award received entries from 50 Emirati storytellers. <\/span>The Award<\/span> was launched in recognition of the late writer Ghanem <\/span>Ghobash<\/span>, who played a significant role in enriching the cultural scene in the UAE and in the establishment of the Emirates <\/span>Writers<\/span> in 1984.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

P<\/span>oet Sheikha Al<\/span> Mutairi, Secretary General of the Union, announced the names of the winners of the award<\/span>. F<\/span>irst place was awarded to Fatima Ibrahim Al Ameri for her story “<\/span>A <\/span>Voice in My Head Says.” Mona Khalifa Al<\/span> Hamoudi secured second place <\/span>for <\/span>her story “Farhana”<\/span>,<\/span> while Noura Abbas Al<\/span>Khoury won third place for “Lemon<\/span>\u2019s Sedition<\/span>“<\/span>.<\/span> Mona Abdul Hussein Al<\/span> Haddad received <\/span>the <\/span>fourth<\/span>–<\/span> place <\/span>award <\/span>for <\/span>her story \u201c<\/span>His Heart Was Full,” and Aisha Saeed Al Zaabi came fifth <\/span>for<\/span> her story “<\/span>The <\/span>Dagger”<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Dr.<\/span> Sultan Al <\/span>Amimi<\/span> welcomed the return of the Ghanem <\/span>Ghobash<\/span> Award<\/span>\u2019s<\/span> competition after a long hiatus, stating<\/span>\u201d<\/span>“The short story has proven through this competition that it is still very much alive, demonstrated by the <\/span>overwhelming <\/span>participation of Emirati youth. It is gratifying to see so many people practicing the art of short story writing.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Al <\/span>Amimi<\/span> emphasi<\/span>s<\/span>ed that literature does not die, and such a valuable award reaffirms this notion, especially as it bears the name of one of the foremost figures in literature and culture in the country. He noted that the award will continue to evolve and grow in the coming seasons.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Aisha Sultan <\/span>underlined<\/span> that the <\/span>overwhelming <\/span>participation in the award completely refutes the <\/span>rumours<\/span> of people’s <\/span>refrain <\/span>from literature, demonstrating the <\/span>great response<\/span> to <\/span>and vitality in the Emirati cultural <\/span>landscape<\/span> and <\/span>its dynamic <\/span>movement.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

She <\/span>highlighted<\/span> that cultural activities in the country are almost continuous, with the month of May witnessing significant events such as the Abu Dhabi Book Fair and the announcement of the Arab<\/span>ic<\/span> Booker Prize, followed by the celebration of <\/span>the <\/span>Emirati Writer\u2019s Day<\/span>,<\/span> an important event of great significance. She remarked<\/span>:<\/span> “All these events occurred within one month, showing that the year is full of cultural events, <\/span>proving<\/span> the vitality of the literary and cultural movement in the country.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sultan <\/span>pointed out to<\/span> the <\/span>passion<\/span> of young writers for knowledge and their<\/span> active<\/span> participation in various literature and creativity competitions, events, and festivals<\/span>, demonstrating<\/span> that the UAE is <\/span>witnessing<\/span> a vibrant cultural movement. She emphasi<\/span>s<\/span>ed that this year’s award <\/span>saw an <\/span>unprecedented participation by young people, which is a sign of a healthy and thriving literary environment. This, she added, requires sustained effort and determination.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sultan stated that celebrating Emirati Writer’s Day is, in fact, a celebration of literary achievements, connecting different generations and recalling the times when pioneering Emirati writers made significant creative contributions that will endure over the years.<\/span><\/p>\n

In <\/span>her<\/span> speech, Sheikha Al<\/span> Mutairi praised the pioneers of Emirati literature and emphasized that the award bears the name of the great intellectual <\/span>figurer, <\/span>Ghanem <\/span>Ghobash<\/span>. The Union chose to name the award after him in recognition and celebration of his lasting impact, aiming to perpetuate these unique contributions.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Al<\/span> Mutairi stated that <\/span>the<\/span> celebration <\/span>of the award\u2019s winners <\/span>is part of <\/span>the <\/span>Emirati Writer’s Day, which hono<\/span>u<\/span>rs creative personalities and literary achievements. She highlighted that <\/span>honouring<\/span> the winners of the award is both natural and deserved, a tradition the Union has always upheld. “We are a nation that <\/span>honours<\/span> brilliant<\/span> minds and <\/span>those with knowledge and <\/span>words<\/span> of wisdom<\/span>, dedicating spaces to the luminous names that have passed through and left<\/span> behind<\/span> a beautiful<\/span>and rich<\/span> legacy,” she said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Dr.<\/span> Badia Al Hashemi, a member of the award jury, delivered a report on the award and the extent of participation. She presented a brief history of the award, which was launched in 1990, highlighting its continuity despite pauses in some periods. She emphasized that the award has now returned with greater strength.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking<\/span> on behalf of the participants, Fatima Al Ameri expressed her <\/span>pleasure<\/span> to be part of th<\/span>e <\/span>group of writers celebrating <\/span>the <\/span>Emirati Writer’s Day, which marks the anniversary of the founding of the Emirates Writers Union. She praised the Union as an institution that has nurtured many literary <\/span>icons<\/span> in the country and consistently demonstrated its faith in you<\/span>ng people<\/span> while bridging generational gaps.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

At the end of the event, Sultan Al <\/span>Amimi<\/span> and Aisha Sultan <\/span>honored<\/span> the winners of the award and the members of the jury, which included Badia Al Hashemi, Lulwa Al Mansour, Salha <\/span>Oba<\/span>e<\/span>d<\/span>, Abdel Fattah Sabri, and Ibrahim Al Hashemi.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
