Egyptian writer Fatma Qandil has been awarded the\u00a0Naguib Mahfouz<\/a>\u00a0Medal for Literature by the American University in Cairo Press for her first novel,\u00a0Aqfas Farigha<\/i>\u00a0(Empty Cages).<\/span><\/p>\n

The award, presented annually on the Nobel laureate Naguib Mahfouz\u2019s birthday on December 11, is in its 25th year. A committee selects the best contemporary novel published in Arabic in the previous two years and the prize consists of a silver medal, translation into English, publication under the AUC Press\u2019s fiction imprint Hoopoe and $5,000 in cash.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the first time in my life that I\u2019ve ever received a prize,\u201d Qandil, 64, said in Arabic at the ceremony at AUC on Sunday evening.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe joy of writing has always been enough for me, but it seems that prizes are delightful in their own way and I\u2019m getting to experience that for the first time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Qandil is a retired associate professor in the Arabic department at Helwan University in Cairo and deputy editor-in-chief of\u00a0Fusul<\/i>, a magazine of literary criticism. She has published numerous collections of poetry, works of literary criticism and translations into Arabic.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cI was part of the generation that grew up with Mahfouz, from\u00a0The Cairo Trilogy<\/i>\u00a0to\u00a0The Harafish,<\/i>\u201d Qandil told\u00a0The National<\/i>. \u201cIt is impossible to choose a favourite.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mahfouz, who died in 2006 aged 94, wrote dozens of novels, short stories, plays and screenplays over his 70-year career.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Cairo Trilogy<\/i>, published in 1956, follows an Egyptian family across three generations from the 1920s.<\/span><\/p>\n

He was propelled to international fame in 1988, when he received the Nobel Prize for Literature. He is the only Arab writer to have won the award.<\/span><\/p>\n

When Qandil was 16, in 1974, she wrote a letter to Mahfouz at\u00a0Al Ahram<\/i>\u00a0newspaper, to which he contributed op-ed columns and short stories.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBack then all the girls were crazy about Hussein Fahmy, the star of the film\u00a0Watch out for Zouzou<\/i>,\u201d Qandil said in her speech on Sunday. \u201cWhen I wrote to Naguib Mahfouz \u2026 I said, \u2018Hussein Fahmy may be the man of every girl\u2019s dreams, but not mine. You are\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She never received a response as a teenager, but said, \u201cI guess he was waiting to make sure I was serious \u2014 to make sure I would become a writer \u2014 and now he has finally agreed to share the spotlight with me.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThank you, sir, and happy birthday,\u201d Qandil added.<\/span><\/p>\n

The selection panel for the prize was chaired by Shereen Abouelnaga, professor of English and comparative literature at Cairo University, and included: Thaer Deeb, a writer, translator and critic; Adam Talib, associate professor of classical Arabic literature at AUC; Hussein Hammouda, professor of Arabic literature at Cairo University; and Dina Heshmat, an assistant professor of Arabic and Islamic civilisations at AUC.<\/span><\/p>\n

The panel selected\u00a0Empty Cages<\/i>, a work that mixes autobiography with fiction, out of 153 submissions.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe author draws on difficult life experiences throughout\u00a0Empty Cages<\/i>, but by rejecting the memoir form, she is able to excavate the deep wounds of her past through narrative,\u201d Deeb wrote in the judges\u2019 citations.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a work in which boundaries disappear: the boundary between fiction and social biography, between discourse and representation, between life, testament and art.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Qandil told\u00a0The National<\/i>\u00a0she wrote\u00a0Empty Cages<\/i>\u00a0following the death of her brother, one of her last remaining family members.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a kind of therapy when I found myself sitting with my memories,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Qandil dedicated the award to Arab women writers and \u201cyoung women, including those who are still navigating their own way to the magical world we call writing\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPerhaps this prize will show them that recognition always comes in the end,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The AUC Press has been the primary publisher of Mahfouz\u2019s English-language editions for more than 30 years. It has also been responsible for the publication of about 600 foreign-language editions of his works in more than 40 languages around the world since 1988.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the awards ceremony on Sunday, the AUC Press also celebrated the publication of the English translation of the 2021 prize winner,\u00a0The Disappearance of Mr Nobody<\/i>\u00a0by Ahmed Taibaoui, translated by Jonathan Wright.<\/span><\/p>\n
