His English work on Palestinian writer Najwan Darwish\u2019s poetry collection \u2018Exhausted on the Cross\u2019 won the Sarah Maguire Prize<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

<\/picture><\/span><\/div>\n

The biennial Sarah Maguire Prize for Poetry in Translation has been awarded to the poetry collection\u00a0Exhausted on the Cross<\/i>, written by\u00a0Palestinian<\/a>\u00a0poet\u00a0Najwan Darwish<\/a>\u00a0and translated by Egyptian-American editor, writer and scholar, Kareem James Abu-Zeid.<\/span><\/p>\n

Commenting on the work, Rosalind Harvey, chairwoman of judges, says: \u201cIn its direct, stripped-back lines, the collection demonstrates both the limits and the necessity of language, inviting us to ask, together, how we can move through and beyond suffering.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Abu-Zeid says the prize, named after poet Maguire, who was \u201ca champion of international poetry\u201d, was a huge honour.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNajwan and I both poured an immense amount of time and creative energy into\u00a0Exhausted on the Cross<\/i>, as did the whole team at NYRB Poets, and it is very rewarding to be recognised for our work by such an esteemed panel of judges.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Exhausted on the Cross\u00a0<\/i>was selected from a shortlist of six books which included poets from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Korea, Mauritius, Mexico and Syria. Darwish and Abu-Zeid, who have been working together for 13 years, will share their winnings of \u00a33,000 ($3,460).<\/span><\/p>\n

Abu-Zeid is no stranger to accolades, having received both the 2017 PEN Centre USA Translation Prize and the 2018 National Endowment for the Arts translation grant.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, having his translation of Najwan Darwish\u2019s\u00a0Exhausted On the Cross<\/i>\u00a0shortlisted for four awards in two countries is unprecedented.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve received recognition for my translations before, but this is the first time I\u2019ve had four different prizes \u2014 three in the US and one in the UK \u2014 acknowledge a single book before in some way. It\u2019s great for the book, which of course makes me very happy,\u201d says Abu-Zeid.<\/span><\/p>\n

Darwish, a Palestinian writer who lives between Haifa and his birthplace of\u00a0Jerusalem<\/a>, has been described by the\u00a0New York Review of Books<\/i>\u00a0as \u201cone of the foremost contemporary Arab poets\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

When selecting the\u00a0Exhausted on the Cross\u00a0<\/i>for its shortlist, the 2022 National Translation Award judges described Darwish\u2019s second volume of poetry as\u00a0\u201c<\/b>poignant, raw, unflinching, and deeply humane, infusing the sorrow and suffering of occupation and the human condition with a startling lyricism\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

They added: \u201cKareem James Abu-Zeid\u2019s unforgettable translation in its stark, clean, yet melodic register, invites us into the complexity of Darwish\u2019s poetry, the suppleness of his\u00a0Arabic<\/a>, and the uncompromising vision of resistance in the face of oppression that beats at the heart of this marvellous book.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Abu-Zeid is a long-time admirer of Darwish\u2019s writing, having spent more than a decade translating his work. \u201cHonestly, I love all of Najwan\u2019s work,\u201d Abu-Zeid tells\u00a0The National<\/i>. \u201cI feel that his poetry keeps getting better and better.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHis work resonates both spiritually and politically with me. There\u2019s a variety of themes and styles, and also of tone, so that I\u2019m always learning something new.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The translator says he appreciates the nuanced ways in which history and politics appear in Darwish\u2019s work.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThings are almost never black and white in his poetry, even though it never shies away from forcefully calling out injustice. And although he\u2019s very much a Palestinian poet, he\u2019s completely against all forms of nationalism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite focusing on events and issues that are specific to Palestine, Abu-Zeid says that there is a \u201cuniversal\u201d feel, which seems to transcend time and space.<\/span><\/div>\n

Amid Darwish\u2019s eight published books, translated into more than 20 languages, Abu-Zeid believes this particular strand stands out the most in\u00a0Exhausted on the Cross<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/i>Several of Najwan\u2019s collections are more anchored in a specific place and time. He has one collection that arose from an extended period of time he spent in London; and another that is centred on the city of Akka [Acre]; and another that is anchored in Granada.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHaifa does emerge repeatedly in\u00a0Exhausted on the Cross<\/i>, but there\u2019s a lot more travelling across space and time in this book \u2014 present-day Gaza, medieval Baghdad, Samarkand, Nepal, Aswan and so on \u2014 the geography and epoch are constantly slipping.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the poems included in the collection,\u00a0My Defeated Banner,\u00a0<\/i>reads:\u00a0<\/i>\u201cIf I could come back, I wouldn\u2019t come under any other banner \/ I\u2019d still embrace you with two severed hands \/ I don\u2019t want wings in paradise, I just want your graves by the river \/ I want eternity at the breakfast table with the bread and oil \/ I want you\u00a0<\/i>\u2014 earth, my defeated banner.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Acclaimed Chilean poet Raul Zurita describes the poem \u201cin its devastating beauty\u201d, not just as one of the peak moments of Darwish\u2019s poetry, but \u201cthe writing of our time\u201d.<\/span><\/div>\n

Zurita says: \u201cExpelled from their ancestral land, permanently besieged and persecuted, women who have lost everything \u2014 their houses, their neighbourhoods, their children \u2014 make present to \u2026 the reader that in this land of victims and perpetrators, displaced and disappeared, all the rest of us are survivors.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cExhausted \u2026 on a cross made of rubble and death, of love and shame, we glimpse the limits of an immortality we cannot escape, an immortality that condemns us to death. Yet by reading this poetry one can come to love that condemnation and thus love the whole earth \u2014 our defeated banner.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

That earlier collection describes events such as the 2008 Israeli air raids on Gaza with intensity, \u201cThe earth is three nails \/ and mercy a hammer: \/ Strike, Lord \/ Strike with the planes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

However, his newer collection merges this with what Abu-Zeid calls \u201ca certain weariness of spirit \u2014 the tedium of an endless occupation, but also the suffering inherent in the human condition itself\u201d.<\/span><\/div>\n

\u201cThere is no quick crucifixion any more,\u201d says Abu-Zeid, \u201cand certainly no resurrection in glory on the third day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The works ebb and flow with the tides of a uniquely Palestinian experience of humanity; carried upwards by waves of hope, before crashing into the inevitability of despair.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe ones hanging \/ are tired, \/ so bring us down \/ and give us some rest,\u201d begins the titular poem, only to later descend into \u201cLord, \/ sharpen your knife \/ and give your sacrifice its rest.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Abu-Zeid says Darwish\u2019s work draws upon a broad array of traditions, including pre-Islamic poetry, the music of Umm Kulthum, contemporary Iranian cinema, classical and modern Chinese poetry, art history and Latin American literature, among others.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cUnlike most of the authors I\u2019ve translated, we work quite closely together,\u201d Abu-Zeid says.<\/span><\/p>\n

On their winning formula, he says: \u201cOur guiding criteria with the translations is almost always, \u2018Does it work well as poetry in English?\u2019 in addition, of course, to accurately conveying the meanings of the Arabic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Abu-Zeid attributes his success to a \u201cholistic\u201d approach to translation. \u201cI\u2019ve seen so many translations of great poetry that translate all the words correctly, without an eye to the overall context, and the result is almost nonsensical.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe could say that a poem produces a set of effects: semantic, sonic, emotional, spiritual. The literary translation\u2019s job is to attempt to reproduce those effects, insofar as possible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
