Indian novel \u2018Tomb of Sand\u2019 wins International Booker Prize<\/span><\/p>\n

Geetanjali Shree’s work is the first book in any Indian language to win the high-profile award<\/span><\/h2>\n
<\/picture><\/span><\/div>\n

Indian writer\u00a0Geetanjali Shree<\/a>\u00a0and American translator Daisy Rockwell won the International Booker Prize on Thursday for\u00a0Tomb of Sand,<\/i>\u00a0a vibrant novel with a boundary-crossing, 80-year-old heroine.<\/span><\/p>\n

Originally written in\u00a0Hindi<\/a>, it is the first book in any Indian language to win the high-profile award, which recognises fiction from around the world that has been translated into English.<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u00a350,000 ($63,000) prize money will be split between New Delhi resident Shree and Rockwell, who lives in Vermont.<\/span><\/p>\n

Translator Frank Wynne, chairman of the judging panel, said committee \u201coverwhelmingly\u201d chose\u00a0Tomb of Sand<\/i>\u00a0after \u201ca very passionate debate”.<\/span><\/p>\n

The book tells the story of an elderly widow who dares to cast off convention and confront the ghosts of her experiences during the subcontinent\u2019s tumultuous 1947 partition into India and Pakistan.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Wynne said that despite confronting traumatic events, \u201cit is an extraordinarily exuberant and incredibly playful book”.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt manages to take issues of great seriousness \u2014 bereavement, loss, death \u2014 and conjure up an extraordinary choir, almost a cacophony, of voices.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is extraordinarily fun and it is extraordinarily funny.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Shree\u2019s book beat five other finalists including Polish Nobel literature laureate\u00a0Olga Tokarczuk<\/a>, Claudia Pineiro of Argentina, South Korean author Bora Chung, Norweigan author Jon Fosee and Japanese author Mieko Kawakami to be awarded the prize at a ceremony in London.<\/span><\/p>\n

The International Booker Prize is awarded every year to a translated work of fiction published in the UK or Ireland. It is run alongside the Booker Prize for English-language fiction.<\/span><\/p>\n

The prize was set up to boost the profile of fiction in other languages, which accounts for only a small share of books published in Britain, and to salute the often unacknowledged work of literary translators.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wynne said the prize aimed to show that \u201cliterature in translation is not some form of cod liver oil that is supposed to be good for you”.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tomb of Sand<\/i>\u00a0is published in Britain by small publisher Tilted Axis Press.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was founded by Deborah Smith, who won the 2016 International Booker for translating Han Kang\u2019s\u00a0The Vegetarian<\/i>, to publish books from Asia.<\/span><\/p>\n

The novel has not yet been published in the US but Wynne said he expected that to change with \u201ca flurry of offers\u201d after its Booker victory.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI would be gobsmacked if it didn\u2019t increase its sales by more than 1,000 per cent [in Britain] in the next week,\u201d Wynne said. \u201cPossibly more.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
