Robots can do many of the jobs previously performed by humans, but could they ever replace artists?<\/span><\/p>\n

A team of French entrepreneurs who believe so have written a computer algorithm that can create original paintings with some resemblance to works by Old Masters such as Rembrandt.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The pictures of an imagined \u201cBaron of Belamy\u201d and his aristocratic relations have a smudgy, blurred finish that would not have impressed Rembrandt\u2019s clients, but are good enough for the auction house Christie\u2019s to put one of them on sale in New York in October with a price estimate of $7,000 to $10,000.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are artists with a different type of paintbrush. Our paintbrush is an algorithm developed on a computer,\u201d said Hugo Caselles-Dupre, a computer engineer who founded the group with childhood friends Gauthier Vernier and Pierre Fautrel, who both have a business background.<\/span><\/p>\n

The artworks are created by the Generative Adversarial Network (GAN), an algorithm that learns to generate new images by being fed a database of existing paintings – 15,000 portraits in the case of the \u201cBelamy\u201d pictures.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe visual is not the only thing that comprises the final portrait,\u201d said Fautrel.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAll of the message, and the artistic process to get to the visual, are also important, even more than the final product,\u201d he said, admitting that GAN\u2019s pictures \u2014 printed onto canvas and then framed \u2014 are fuzzy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact that it\u2019s not yet perfect, I think is logical because it\u2019s a technology that is still very new, and to have very good results, we need significant calculating power, that for now we don\u2019t have in this small apartment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The trio sold \u201cThe Count of Belamy\u201d for around $10,000 to Paris-based collector Nicolas Laugero-Lasserre.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat was astonishing was that they knew nothing about art, nothing at all,\u201d Laugero-Lasserre said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn the beginning, I took them for crazy people. And finally, are they crazy, are they genius? We\u2019ll see,\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Some artists are unconvinced that a machine can make real art.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf there was no anger from Picasso, \u2018Guernica\u2019 would never have existed. If Modigliani were not in love with his models, his nudes would be dull and uninteresting,\u201d said painter Robert Prestigiacomo.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s always a feeling behind a painting, always \u2013 whether it\u2019s anger, yearning, desire. And artificial intelligence is \u2013 well, you have the word \u2018artificial\u2019 in it – there you have it!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
