As part of its effort to support local theatre, the Sultan Bin Ali Al Owais Cultural Foundation, in cooperation with Al Ahli Dubai Theatre, will host a performance of “Light-Spirited”, a play written and directed by Jamal Matar. The performance will be staged at 7:30 pm on Thursday, March 9, 2017, at the theatre of the Sultan Bin Ali Al Owais Cultural Foundation in Rigga street, Deira Dubai.

The play sheds light on the conflict between motion and stillness and the quest for a better existence where dreams, ambitions and wishes are fulfilled as opposed to remaining in the same place and achieving no progress. Moreover, the play tackles the themes of genuine versus fake contentment, which causes individuals to fall prey to their fear of the unknown. The play stars actor Jamal Al Sameity as the shoe shiner and Talal Mahmoud as the bank guard.

Playwright and director Jamal Matar was born in 1963. His previous work includes producing and presenting programs at Dubai TV, as he hosted many popular talk-shows aired on Dubai TV over the previous 10 years. He also worked as a writer in the Culture Section at Al Bayan newspaper as well as a producer and radio presenter at Noor Dubai radio station. Some of the most notable plays he wrote and directed include: “Qabr Al Wali” (The Grave of the Pious Man), “Ghab Al Gatw” (When the Cat is Away), “Ra’i Al Boom Abarni”, “Hilm Al Sa’ada” (The Dream of Happiness), “Antar wa Abla” (Antar and Abla), “Jamila”, “Dar Al Hawa Dar”, “Bayad Al Thalj” (Snow white), “Qadari Ghab Anni wa Rahal” (My Destiny has left me). Matar has received many playwriting and directing awards.

It is worth mentioning that the Sultan Bin Ali Al Owais Cultural Foundation is keen on supporting local theatrical performances, in the aim of strengthening the role of theatre in the progress of society. The Foundation had previously hosted local theatrical performances such as “Al Hallaj Waheedan” (Lonely Hallaj) "Bahloul", "Bayta" and "Saheel Al Teen" (Neighs of Clay) among many others, which were met with great acclaim in the UAE.
