The Sultan Bin Ali Al Owais Cultural Foundation has closed nominations for the 15th session of Al Owais Cultural Awards (2016-2017) at the end of February 2017. The Foundation announced that the total number of candidates nominated in all categories of the Award is 1662, while the number of nominations in each of the categories is as follows: Poetry 293, Short Story, Novel and Drama 401, Literary Studies and Criticism 263, Humanities and Future Studies 468, Cultural and Scientific Achievement 237, which marks an increase (104 candidates) in the number of candidates nominated for the Awards in its previous session.
It is worth mentioning that 86 leading Arab novelists, writers and intellectuals have won the Al Owais Cultural Awards to date. Moreover, the jury committees of the Awards have seen the participation of more than 147 referees from different cultural fields. The jury committees will now start reviewing the different submissions; a task that will extend for a number of months. The jury committees carry out their work in an atmosphere filled with impartiality, fairness, objectivity and confidentiality, qualities that the Al Owais Cultural Awards have been noted for in all the previous sessions, hence making the Sultan Bin Ali Al Owais Cultural Award one of the most esteemed cultural prizes in the Arab world and beyond. The Al Owais Cultural Awards are considered of great moral and material value to its winners.
The Sultan Bin Ali Al Owais Cultural Foundation had sent out more than 6,000 nomination forms and 6,000 nominee invitations, as well as 6,000 information packages about the Foundation and the Al Owais Awards to most universities, academies, cultural institutions, literary associations, and to some authors throughout the Arab world, so that nominations and applications may be included in the 15th edition of Al Owais Awards (2016-2017).
According to the rules and regulations of the Al Owais Awards, innovators can nominate themselves for the Awards by directly applying to the General Secretariat. In addition, 5 Arab authors are entitled to nominate whomever they see deserves this award. The total value of the award is $600,000, while the winner in each of the following categories receives $120,000: Poetry, Short Story, Novel and Drama, Literary Studies and Criticism, Humanities and Future Studies, and Cultural and Scientific Achievement.
